Transcribe AAC
Advanced Audio Coding
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a modern audio compression format designed to be the successor to MP3, offering better sound quality at similar or lower bitrates. Widely used in streaming services, YouTube, Apple devices, and digital broadcasting, AAC has become one of the most popular audio formats worldwide. It uploads here as it is, in over 100 languages.

Raw AAC or inside an M4A?
AAC is a codec, not a container, and that distinction explains most confusion around the extension. A bare .aac file is an ADTS stream โ the codec with a minimal frame header and nothing else. The same audio wrapped in an MPEG-4 container becomes .m4a, which is what phones and iTunes write.
Both upload here as they are. The difference is metadata and seeking: ADTS has no index, so some players cannot jump within it and report duration poorly. That does not affect transcription, which reads the stream end to end regardless.
Raw AAC is rare here โ 62 files against 11,018 M4A. If you have the choice, .m4a is the better container.
How long it actually takes
These are medians measured on our production cluster, expressed as time per hour of audio.
| Engine | One hour of audio | Faster than real time |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Parakeet | 18 seconds | 200ร |
| Whisper large-v3-turbo (default) | 1 min 28 s | 41ร |
| Speaker labeling, added on top | +2 min 7 s | 28ร |
Against the AAC files uploaded here: the median, about 10 minutes 46 seconds at 100 kbps, comes back in roughly 16 seconds. Nine in ten are under 56 minutes.
AAC at 100 kbps โ is that enough?
Comfortably. AAC holds speech together better than MP3 at the same bitrate, and in any case everything is resampled to 16 kHz mono before transcription, so the differences between codecs above about 64 kbps disappear entirely.
Trouble starts below roughly 32 kbps, where consonants smear badly enough that the damage survives resampling. AAC at podcast and voice-memo bitrates is nowhere near that.
Which limit you will hit first
Duration, by a wide margin. At 100 kbps, 5 GB would hold well over a hundred hours; the largest AAC processed here was 347 MB.
- Split by session rather than by clock if a recording runs past eight hours.
- No need to re-encode. Converting AAC to MP3 adds a lossy generation and gains nothing.
AAC Transcription FAQ
Common questions about transcribing AAC files
Transcription time scales with the duration of the audio, not the size of the file. An hour takes about 1 minute 28 seconds on the default engine โ a measured median across our production cluster โ and speaker labels add about 2 minutes 7 seconds per hour on top.
After your AAC transcript
- choosing an export format โ TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT, VTT or JSON โ which one fits what you are about to do with the text.
- timestamped transcription โ every segment is time-coded, so you can click a line and hear that moment.
- audio to text converter โ all 35 formats we accept, with measured processing times for each engine.
- transcription app for Mac โ transcribe offline with Whisper and Parakeet, free, without uploading anything.
