The WAV files people actually send
WAV is uncompressed, and CD-quality stereo runs 1,411 kbps. The median WAV uploaded here runs 129 kbps โ close to 8 kHz mono, which is telephone quality. These are dictation machines, call recordings and voice notes saved as WAV, not music.
That is worth saying because it changes the advice. There is no point converting a voice WAV to MP3 to save bandwidth: 1,797 files, median 7 MB and 4 minutes 16 seconds, upload in seconds as they are. And there is no accuracy penalty either way โ the model resamples everything to 16 kHz mono.
How long it actually takes
These are medians measured on our production cluster, expressed as time per hour of audio.
| Engine | One hour of audio | Faster than real time |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Parakeet | 18 seconds | 200ร |
| Whisper large-v3-turbo (default) | 1 min 28 s | 41ร |
| Speaker labeling, added on top | +2 min 7 s | 28ร |
Against the WAV files uploaded here: the median, just over four minutes, comes back in about six seconds. Nine in ten are under 42 minutes.
Does uncompressed audio transcribe better?
No. WAV holds the samples untouched, which is the right thing for an archive or an edit, but the transcriber works at 16 kHz mono and everything above that is discarded before the model sees it. A WAV and a 128 kbps MP3 of the same recording arrive as very nearly the same signal.
The old claim on this page โ 98% accuracy for WAV against 95% for compressed formats โ was never measured and has been removed. What does decide accuracy is the recording: microphone distance, room, overlapping speakers, and bitrates under about 32 kbps.
Which limit you will hit first
It depends on what kind of WAV you have, which is why both limits are worth knowing. At voice bitrates duration binds long before size. At CD-quality stereo, 5 GB is about eight hours โ the two limits arrive together. At 96 kHz/24-bit, size binds at roughly two hours.
- The largest WAV processed here was 2.84 GB. Nothing has hit the ceiling yet.
- Converting to FLAC halves the upload and is lossless โ the samples decode back identically. Converting to MP3 also works and costs nothing in transcript quality.
WAV Transcription FAQ
Common questions about transcribing WAV files
WAV files are uncompressed, containing all original audio data. A 3-minute WAV file can be 30MB+ versus 3MB for MP3. This size ensures zero quality loss, crucial for professional work.
WAV Conversion Questions
How do I convert WAV to text?
Upload the WAV file, select its language, and review the transcript when processing finishes. Depending on your plan, you can edit and export it with timestamps and speaker labels.
How long does WAV to text conversion take?
It depends on the recording length and audio complexity. An uncompressed WAV can take longer to upload, although transcription processing is driven mainly by the recording duration.
How much does WAV transcription cost?
The Free plan allows 3 files per day and shows the first 5 minutes of each. Plus costs $19.99/month or $99.99/year; Premium costs $29.99/month or $149.99/year.
What WAV sample rate works best for transcription?
A clear voice recording at 16 kHz or above is usually sufficient. TranscribeNext also accepts other common sample rates. Microphone placement and background noise matter more than an extremely high sample rate.
Can I transcribe WAV files from professional audio recordings?
Yes. WAV works well for interviews, studio sessions, and field recordings. Always verify names, numbers, and specialist content before treating an AI transcript as final.
Does it work with WAV files from voice recorders?
Yes. You can upload WAV files from dictaphones and portable recorders. Recordings with strong noise, distant voices, or overlapping speech will usually require more review.
