A 1992 container, still arriving
AVI predates almost everything else on this site โ Microsoft introduced it in 1992 โ and it survives because camcorders, screen recorders and surveillance systems kept writing it long after the industry moved on.
What arrives here reflects that: 20 files, median 3 minutes 36 seconds at 1,693 kbps. Short clips at a high bitrate, which is what an older camera or a lightly-compressed capture produces.
The audio inside is usually PCM or MP3, occasionally something more obscure. All of it is decoded on arrival; the container being old changes nothing about the transcript.
How long it actually takes

Against the AVI files uploaded here: the median, well under four minutes, comes back in about five seconds. Nine in ten are under 17 minutes โ the shortest distribution of any format on this site.
The video track is discarded
Only the audio is transcribed. AVI carries no modern video codec efficiency, so its files are large for their length, but none of that weight reaches the model โ an AVI and an MP4 of the same duration take the same time.
If the upload is slow, extracting the audio removes almost all of it: at 1,693 kbps an hour of AVI is about 730 MB, against roughly 60 MB for the same hour of sound alone.
Which limit you will hit first
Size, at these bitrates. 5 GB at 1,693 kbps is around six and a half hours, arriving just before the 8-hour limit; the largest AVI processed here was 1.03 GB.
- Extract the audio for anything long. It sidesteps the size limit entirely and costs nothing in quality.
- Very old AVI files sometimes carry unusual audio codecs. If one is refused, remuxing the audio to WAV or MP3 will make it readable.
